It was a few hours later when Zoe left her room again, and when she did saw a thing that knocked the breath out of her. Spread out on the main table in the center of the lounge were all the research files she had managed to save from her father’s house. On the sofa in front of the table, Lee sat with a note pad, a pen, and a confused look on his face. Aside from a few scribbles, the pad was empty.

“What’s going on?” She said, a harshness to her words that she didn’t mean to let out. Lee didn’t seem to hear it though.

“Oh hey. I thought I’d take a look, see if I could work some stuff out.” He said innocently enough, then scooted from the middle of the sofa over to one side. “You’re welcome to join me if you want. You’ll probably have more luck then I will.” Lee tapped the seat next to him in a friendly gesture, then turned back to the files on the table. For a second, Zoe remained rooted to the spot. The sight of all the laid out files was like a black hole she couldn’t tear her eyes from. She took a deep breath, then walked over to join him. Her first instinct was to sit in the armchair on the other side of the table, but she forced herself to take the seat he had offered.

“Any progress?” She asked, pushing her anxieties aside. She looked over the files. The various print offs and clippings she had acquired were all in English, but they might as well have been written in some lost, ancient language that promised the secrets of the universe for all she was getting from it. Even with all her hand scribbled notes connecting random ideas and events, it was all just telling a story that had no end. There were a few leads, a handful of hopes that might lead to some answers and a way into the USB, but they were like sand falling though her fingers every time she tried to grasp them. She gotten her hands on every decryption programme she could, and her laptop was practically burning up running them, but even then there was little progress. It was all a glaring monument to her every failure, and she was finding it ever harder to walk the line between determined frustration and outright despair.

“Not an inch.” Lee replied, showing her his work pad. “I was hoping you’d be able to see something I can’t.”

“Like what? It’s all just one big mess. I’m beginning to doubt there’s even anything here at all.” She said, picking up one of the sheets and shaking her head. Lee put a hand on her shoulder. A shiver went through her.

“Hey come on, we’re not there yet. Look at the sectioning of the text, it’s not random. There has to be something there. Just think. You know your father, there must be something in that connection.
